Paul Merson has raved about Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku after his midweek display in the Champions League group stages.

The 28-year-old striker’s excellent start to the new season continued on Tuesday night by scoring at home to Russian opponents Zenit St Petersburg.

It was a fairly close contest on the European stage, but the Blues took three points with a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.

Unsurprisingly, Lukaku was the individual to come to Chelsea’s aid when they needed an attacking spark. The Belgian centre-forward produced an amazing header low into the bottom corner after rising highest to get on the end of Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross.

Pundit Merson has hailed him after his goalscoring performance and says it’s what he’ll bring to the Chelsea group all season. He also hinted he reckons he could score in this weekend’s London derby away to Tottenham in the Premier League.

“I watched Chelsea play against Zenit in the UEFA Champions League and Romelu Lukaku didn’t have too many chances. However, he popped up to score the matchwinner with a brilliant goal and that is exactly what he brings to the team – I fancy him to score every time he plays!” Merson told Sportskeeda.

Can Lukaku help launch another Champions League bid?

Chelsea won the Champions League trophy without Lukaku in their squad last season, but there is no doubt he’s improved them.

First of all, it’s extremely difficult to retain the European crown. The Blues are the team everyone wants to beat and there is no doubt some of the other teams across Europe have strengthened considerably.

But, Chelsea are set up perfectly to go deep in this season’s competition yet again.

With such a consistent and reliable defence, Thomas Tuchel’s side have the balance to really hurt teams on European away trips.

They’ve now got the cutting edge through Lukaku to go along with their fierce defensive line.
