‘I can only imagine’: Graham Potter says 23-year-old Chelsea player did something v Salzburg he could never do

Graham Potter claims he could only ever imagine scoring the stunning goal that Chelsea’s Kai Havertz produced against Red Bull Salzburg.

Havertz, 23, netted a breathtaking goal last night in a 2-1 away win for the Blues against Salzburg.

With the score at 1-1, the German attacker fired an unstoppable finish from the edge of the box into the top corner to win the game for his side.

It means Potter is now nine games unbeaten as Chelsea’s head coach and his side have qualified for the Champions League knockout rounds as group winners.

Havertz goal against Salzburg

Chelsea’s forward had scored just two goals all season before yesterday’s win against Salzburg, but he showed just how much quality he possesses in his left foot.

The Germany international took an exquisite touch from outside the box before unleashing the match-winning strike.

When asked about the importance of Havertz’s goal, Potter responded: “His quality is there; he’s an incredibly talented player. He’s been nearly there and obviously, scoring a goal like that is bound to help. I wouldn’t be able to score a goal like that to be fair, I can only imagine! It’s a fantastic strike and an indication of the quality he has. So I’m really pleased for him.”

Potter was a professional footballer in his playing career that did reach as high the Premier League level, but the former left-back says the Havertz strike would be beyond him.

In fairness, it was a piece of brilliance from the Blues star that deserves to win any game.

Havertz may have done better with a first-half header that he hit straight at the keeper, but he persevered and eventually got his goal in emphatic fashion.

It was a typical display from him in terms of him buzzing around the field with plenty of energy and nice touches. His game just needs to be more productive and clinical, though.

With the World Cup fast approaching, these next few Chelsea appearances are a great platform for him to take some momentum into Germany’s international tournament.

There’s no doubting he’s got the individual ability, something he proved when he scored twice against England last month.

Let’s hope Potter is the man to get the very best out of him at club level moving forward.
