Are Chelsea ready to spend big again?

Chelsea will find out in the coming weeks whether or not the transfer ban will be lifted for the January transfer window. Speculation is growing, and chairman Bruce Buck has teased the possibility of the Blues spending big once again.

There is no denying that the Blues are one of the biggest spenders in England, with net spend since 2003 only being topped by the Manchester clubs.

However, in recent years, Chelsea seems to have quietened down on the transfer front; of course partly down to the recent transfer ban.

This has led to questions being raised over the commitment of owner Roman Abramovich. This coupled with the delay of his visa renewal has made some people ask questions. He has not attended a home game since 2018, but Buck has denied these rumors.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Buck said ”In terms of being involved, in looking at new players, talking about whether to extend players’ contracts, do we buy this player, do we sell this player, he was always intimately involved in that from day one and is just as intimately involved now.”

This will serve as comfort to many Chelsea fans, but it was what Buck said next that has turned up the excitement for the Chelsea faithful. ”Let’s see what happens in the next transfer window” were his words and some fans are seeing this as a hint at what is to come.

Of course, this will be a moot point if the ban is still in place, but it could easily be seen as a teaser for the big plans that the club has in terms of future spending. Whether it be one or two marquee signings or an all-out spending spree, it is certainly an exciting time to be a Blues fan.
