Chelsea legend Ashley Cole has claimed that Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell would be a brilliant signing for the club.
The Leicester full-back is a speed machine currently thriving in Brendan Rodgers’ side at the King Power Stadium, as well as nailing down his spot in the senior England team.
According to the Telegraph, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard could have a £150million budget in the January transfer window after the club’s ban was overturned and Chilwell is one of the main targets.
But the report details that a January swoop is unlikely and that has been backed up by Foxes manager Brendan Rodgers.
“There’ll be no-one leaving in January. Categorically,” Rodgers said in his press conference on Thursday, as quoted by the Leicester Mercury.
Ex-Blues defender Cole has returned to Stamford Bridge following his retirement as a player and is now the Under-15s academy coach.
He has explained the qualities of Chelsea target Chilwell and believes he would be an excellent addition if he ended up moving to West London.
“I would love to see him at Chelsea. He’s doing really well at Leicester,” Cole told talkSPORT.
“He’s enjoying the way Brendan plays and his system; he’s got that licence to attack. When he’s played for England he’s played well – in his last game he got three assists. He’s shown quality not just on the ball, but one-on-one he can defend and he likes to defend.
“I think he’s quality and I’ve heard he’s a Chelsea fan, too, so I would like to see him here. Whether he would want to leave, or if Leicester would want to sell him, that’s something the clubs would have to talk about.”
It looks like a January deal would be impossible for Chelsea to achieve in January for Chilwell, but he’s definitely someone worth waiting for and they should try get him next summer.
The left-back is flying in a Leicester team that sit second right now and it looks like they will shut the doors firmly on any departing players next month.
But Chelsea should prepare a major move for him at the end of the season and offer him a big-money move to Stamford Bridge.
With Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso failing to nail down the left-back spot in the Chelsea squad, it’s certainly an area that could be improve in the long-term.
Chilwell is a left-back that is brilliant going forward with speed and energy, but on the flip side he’s defensively switched on and part of the best backline in the Premier League right now.
