‘Becoming a potent threat’: Alan Shearer really impressed by growing role of 21-year-old Chelsea player

Alan Shearer has raved about the impact Chelsea player Reece James is starting to have at Stamford Bridge.

James, 21, has been an important player since his promotion to the first team in 2019. The right-back is in the dream position of getting to learn the art of defending from club captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, he’s starting to add a new element to his game under Blues manager Thomas Tuchel.

The England international is favoured in a right wing-back role in Tuchel’s system, so fans are getting to see even more of him going forward in attack.

He’s always had an eye for a cross, but his contribution in attack so far this season has been crucial. For example, he netted two stunning goals in the weekend’s 3-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League.

James now has four goals and three assists in just 11 appearances across all competitions this campaign.

Alan Shearer hailed Chelsea’s academy graduate after naming him in his Premier League Team of the Week segment:

“Two outstanding goals from the Chelsea right-back, who is becoming a potent threat in attack. He didn’t have to defend much in the 3-0 victory at Newcastle United,” he wrote.

James is now just five games away from making his 100th senior appearance at Chelsea.

The powerhouse defender was highly rated during his youth days at Cobham, so many won’t be surprised to see he’s now important within the first team.

The impact of his loan at Wigan Athletic in the 2018/19 campaign can’t be understated. He’s looked very much a senior player since he stepped into the main group when Frank Lampard was in charge.

Rio Ferdinand has recently been signing his praises, too.

James wasn’t the only Chelsea representative in Shearer’s Team of the Week from the recent round of Premier League fixtures.

Conor Gallagher, 21, is a Chelsea-owned player making a huge impression out on loan at Crystal Palace this season.

He scored one and assisted another in Palace’s shock 2-0 win at Man City on the weekend.

Shearer waxed lyrical about the Blues loanee’s performance:

“Gallagher continues to look very comfortable at this level. The loanee from Chelsea scored a great goal and bossed the midfield,” he wrote.
