Chelsea’s young midfielder Billy Gilmour has surprisingly broken the club’s running record during his brilliant performance against Everton back in March.

When you think of Gilmour, you would likely picture an intelligent midfielder with simple movements and passes to receive the ball and find his teammates.

Interestingly, according to Sky Sports’ data, the 18-year-old has been Chelsea’s record runner in a match this season.

Gilmour covered 12.62km during Chelsea’s dominant 4-0 league victory against Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton at Stamford Bridge on March 8, when the teenager was also named man of the match.

This N’Golo Kante-esque statistic illustrates the relatively unnoticed industrious side of Gilmour despite his elegant playing style.

The football suspension came at an unfortunate moment for Gilmour, who was in fantastic form after back-to-back man-of-the-match displays against Liverpool in the FA Cup and Everton in the Premier League.

Frank Lampard may still give him another start or two this season but, with the likes of Kante, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic now all back from injury, the already fierce competition for midfield spots has become even more difficult for the teenager.

In terms of the season overall, the skipper Cesar Azpilicueta has been the Blues’ record runner, having covered a total of 284.96km.

It is hardly a surprise as the Spain international has had more minutes than any other Chelsea player this season, but it is still an impressive record, nonetheless.
