Can Crystal Palace on-loan ace Conor Gallagher play against Chelsea in FA Cup semifinal?

Chelsea will face London rivals Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semifinal at Wembley next month — and the big question is: will Conor Gallagher be able to play against his parent club?

The 22-year-old was absent in the two previous matches between the two clubs in the Premier League as Chelsea came out victorious on both occasions.

However, while it is forbidden in the Premier League, it is quite confusing since different competitions have different rules.

Back in 2018, Chelsea granted Derby County permission to field Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori in their Carabao Cup fourth-round tie.

“We believe the experience of facing top-level opposition once more will be of benefit to their on-going development at Derby,” the club said via an official statement at the time.

FA Cup rules do not allow arrangements between Chelsea and Crystal Palace

The FA Cup rules stated: “The Association will not give permission for players on loan or work experience to play against the lending Club.”

So unfortunately for Palace, Gallagher, who has established himself as a key player for Patrick Vieira, will not be able to play in the semifinal.

Although to be fair, Chelsea would have had plenty of reasons to refuse giving Palace permission to play the young midfielder even if the FA had allowed such an arrangement.

The England international already has had more goal contributions than any other Crystal Palace player in the Premier League this season (eight goals and three assists).

Mount is so far the only Chelsea player who has had more goal contributions than Gallagher in the competition.

On the other side of the tournament bracket, Manchester City will face the winners of the game between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.
