Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel explains what he is looking for from potential first-team hires
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said during the pre-season, he and his coaching team are looking for a specific attribute from the players that he might integrate into his squad for the upcoming season.
At the moment, a number of key Chelsea players are still on holiday following their involvement at the Euro, and in Thiago Silva’s case, the Copa America.
Tuchel has still been quite busy, however, as several returning loanees and academy players have also joined in with the training camp.
For these players, in particular, Tuchel said that this is their opportunity to impress and possibly make a case for their inclusion in the first-team squad.
“Of course. Life is full of possibilities,” Tuchel told Chelsea TV.
“For these guys, this is the possibility, clearly.
“I cannot promise, I cannot tell anybody after one week, ‘You’ll be a big part [of the plans] next season.’
“No, but what I really love about these guys is that they’re so positive about it.
“Let’s see. Of course, we look very, very carefully, but nobody can predict the future.”
Obviously, their positions and technical abilities matter a lot. But above all, Tuchel said that he is looking for players with the right mentality.
“We always look for attitude, honestly,” the manager emphasised.
“What else is there? I mean they’re full of talent, all of them, [so] we look for attitude.
“If we hire, we want to hire for attitude.”
