Chelsea were beaten 3-1 away at Everton on Saturday afternoon – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter took out their frustration with captain Cesar Azpilicueta.

The 30-year-old wasn’t the sole reason behind the defensive collapse at Goodison Park, but he was part of a backline that crumbled in the Premier League defeat.

Richarlison put Everton in front early to give them a lift under caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson and there were stages where it looked like their players wanted it more.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin added a second at the beginning of the second-half, as he capitalised on some weak defending from centre-back pairing Kurt Zouma and Andreas Christensen.

In-form Blues midfielder Mateo Kovacic did quickly reduce the deficit with a stunning volley and he was certainly the pick of the players for the visitors.

But late on goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga gave the ball away to help gift Calvert-Lewin his second and wrap up a 3-1 win for struggling Everton.

Frank Lampard’s side have now lost three out of their last four league games and are slowly losing their grip on fourth in the table.

They go into a pivotal Champions League fixture at home to Lille on Tuesday night with low confidence and have hit a bump in the road.

Some of the Chelsea fanbase were quick to call out veteran defender Azpilicueta for his contribution and he did struggle at full-back.

He slotted into the XI at left-back and his positioning wasn’t great, with Theo Walcott causing him problems with his back to goal.

With hindsight the Blues may have looked far more balanced with Emerson Palmieri in the left-back role, as he also offers more going forward.

Here are some Chelsea fans suggesting that Azpilicueta’s best days are now behind him:
