Chelsea were involved in a memorable 4-4 draw against Ajax on Tuesday night in the Champions League group stages – and defender Marcos Alonso was someone who came out of it negatively with major criticism from some ans.
Frank Lampard’s side once again showed their attacking quality by coming from 4-1 down to salvage a point in Europe, with substitute Reece James netting the qualifier.

But there were once again defensive frailties on show at Stamford Bridge and they struggled for large spells against Ajax, before they received two red cards in a minute to give the hosts a numerical advantage.
The Blues gave away a number of needless free-kicks in their own half that Ajax made the most of, albeit two of their goals were own goals with a slice of luck.
Alonso started the contest in his usual left-back position and was substituted off at half-time after a poor display.

The Spaniard found it extremely difficult to handle winger David Neres and the defensive side of his game has always been suspect.
He stepped in for Emerson Palmieri in the full-back area and didn’t look comfortable with his back to goal, even if he did look more of a threat going forward.
The 28-year-old gets some unfair criticism considering he was once a mainstay in Antonio Conte’s title-winning team and makes a difference in attack.

But teammate Emerson definitely has the edge defensively and it was a poor night for Alonso against Ajax.
A selection of Blues supporters on social media don’t believe he should be in the starting XI moving forward.
Here are some Chelsea fans on Alonso:
I’m proud of this Chelsea team, but i urge Lampard to please drop Alonso atleast, he can’t be on our first IX.

He needs to start every game. Azpi or Emerson (AND NEVER ALONSO) at LB. https://t.co/U7emshq8TZ

Alonso should never start in any situation.

Alonso also done for me we need to move on from him. James needs to start matches regularly now don’t mind Azpi playing other side till we can get another proper full back

Reece James made such a difference when he came on. Bin Alonso, put Dave LB and start James every week. What a player.

Alonso should never start for Chelsea again

Please Lampard the next time you don’t have a left-back available, just leave the left-back slot empty but don’t start Alonso!! At least an empty space won’t make mistakes!!
