On-loan Chelsea attacking midfielder Tariq Uwakwe bagged an impressive hat-trick just one day after his loan move to League One side Accrington Stanley.

The season-long loan spell, which was confirmed on Monday, is the 20-year-old’s first taste of senior football.

Uwakwe has been part of the Chelsea youth set-up since the age of eight and was part of the back-to-back FA Youth Cup-winning Chelsea academy side in 2016/17 and 2017/18.

He opened the first page of his senior football career with a bang; a hat-trick and an assist in Accrington’s impressive 7-0 win over Leeds United U-21s in the EFL Trophy.

“That’s just how I wanted it to start, especially to score a hat-trick in my first game, my debut, it’s the best feeling,” he told Accrington’s official website about the win.

Asked about playing in a new position as a left wing-back, he said: “I’ve played in so many positions before I’ve lost count myself.

“But I don’t really mind, as long as I’m playing, I’ll do the job for the team.”

Previously, Uwakwe said he asked for some advice from Chelsea’s ‘loan army’ before making the decision to go out on loan.

He told Accrington’s official website upon his arrival: “I’ve been speaking to them a lot about loans last season and some have even gone already this season, so it was all quite positive.

“They were just talking about getting the experience and the game time, that means everything to a player.”
