Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel admitted he would have liked to have seen more from Timo Werner during the game against Arsenal yesterday.

Addressing the media following his side’s 2-1 victory over the Gunners, Tuchel shared his thoughts on Werner’s display in the final third.

The 25-year-old was making his first appearance in pre-season after his European Championship antics with Germany.

He started the match up front alongside familiar faces in Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz.

It was Werner’s incisive pass that set up Havertz for Chelsea’s opener shortly before the 30-minute mark.

Both of the compatriots were subbed off at half-time as the Blues eventually went on to grab another thanks to Tammy Abraham.

Tuchel telling it straight

Yet, Tuchel’s men should have increased their advantage had it not been for some wasteful finishing.

An issue the manager wanted to cover in his press conference in light of his team’s win.

“It was a concern of the whole team”, he said.

“It’s very hard after just 45 minutes to play at that kind of level.

“There were some chances were he (Werner) could be more decisive but he assisted.”

Unfortunately, this was the story of Werner’s maiden season with Chelsea.

Too often he was found lacking in front of goal and regularly squandered golden opportunities.

His strength certainly came in setting up those around him. He provided 15 assists in all competitions last year

A shot in confidence can be noted as part of the reason behind the attacker’s profligacy in promising positions.

Tuchel will expect more from Werner this time around, now his fellow countryman has a full Premier League campaign under his belt.
