Didier Drogba praises former Chelsea teammate after Club World Cup win
Blues legend Didier Drogba highlighted Cesar Azpilicueta’s illustrious Chelsea career after the 2-1 Club World Cup final win over Palmeiras.
Azpilicueta was part of the Chelsea squad that tasted the final defeat to Corinthians in the 2012 Club World Cup final. He was a young, versatile defender who just arrived from Marseille at the time.
On Saturday, he led the team to secure their first-ever win in the competition as a captain.
It is now safe to say that he has won it all.
Even Drogba, who attended the game, was impressed by how successful the defender has been at the club.
“This guy, in two years, has won more trophies than us in 10!” the former Blues striker told Chelsea TV during Azpilicueta’s post-match interview.
His resilient performance on the pitch aside, Azpilicueta really showcased his leadership qualities with his comments after the game.
“I always try to think about the players who couldn’t play, the ones who were injured, the ones on the bench who couldn’t participate, and the ones who were left out of the starting eleven,” the Spain international said after the game.
“Disappointment is normal.
“After that, I think everybody puts their personal situation aside, and we pushed really hard to get the trophy.”
At 32, Azpilicueta has also seen less game time than he used to in the last couple of seasons.
He is now in the final months of his contract at the club, but the weekend’s final certainly indicated how important a figure he is to the club both on and off the pitch.
