Frank Lampard has claimed that Trevoh Chalobah has been amazing in Chelsea training since he took over at the club.

He told the Evening Standard that the 23-year-old is only going to get better if he continues to apply himself as he does in between games.

Despite the disappointing nature of the 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest at the weekend, the performance of Chalobah was something that will no doubt go down as a positive.

In an unfamiliar right-back role, his attacking impotence in particular was something which may have surprised some supporters in his display deputising for Reece James.

Despite not featuring much recently, the Englishman has plenty of appearances under his belt this season, particularly during Graham Potter’s tenure at the club.

However, an influx of signings at the back, added to by the arrival of Benoit Badiashile in January, have seen his minutes limited in the second half of the campaign.

Lampard very impressed by Chalobah

Lampard has been full of praise for Chalobah though, claiming he can play his football in a number of positions.

He said: “I was looking forward to working with Trev, because I didn’t get that chance when I was here before. In my short period here, you look at the individual performances and I’ve been very happy. I tried to get him on loan when I’ve been working elsewhere.

“It’s been nice and I appreciate what a high-level player he is. The bigger picture is the way he’s applying himself since I’ve come back. He’s a delight to train with every day because he comes in with enthusiasm. He’s low maintenance, and when you talk about the things you want, he tries to do them on the pitch — which is a great thing.

“He’s always had that [passing ability]. He’s played as a No6 on loan, he steps into areas. You just fit that into the way you want to play. He can fill different roles for us; I think it’s a real big plus. He’s going to get a lot better.”

With James likely to be out for the season, it could be another few opportunities for Chalobah to impress on the right in the coming weeks.
