Italian publication Tuttosport has revealed the 100-man shortlist for the 2020 Golden Boy award which includes four Chelsea players.
The award is given to players aged 21 or under in Europe’s top divisions based and has been running since 2003.
This year, Chelsea have had four of their talents among the 100 nominees in Billy Gilmour, Tino Anjorin, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Ethan Ampadu (on loan at RB Leipzig).
Hudson-Odoi and Ampadu were also named in last year’s shortlist, along with Mason Mount, Dujon Henriques Sterling, and Marc Guehi, while this is the first time for Gilmour and Anjorin.
Mount made it into the last year’s final top 20 shortlist, although the award was eventually given to Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.
There are 23 talents from the Premier League in this year’s list, including Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli, Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood and Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
But many believes Bundesliga stars such Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies are among the hot favourites.
Despite having one of the best academies in the world, there has not been any Golden Boy winner from Chelsea academy so far, with the only past winners to play for Chelsea were Cesc Fabregas and Alexandre Pato (loan).
The limited opportunities to break into the first team were among the obvious reasons, but now with Frank Lampard at the helm, this will hopefully change soon.
