Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips has waxed lyrical about Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante after his recent clash against him.
England’s 25-year-old midfielder Phillips is the talisman for Leeds, who were comprehensively beaten 3-1 on their trip to Stamford Bridge last Saturday in the Premier League.
Chelsea went into the fixture against Leeds knowing they would face a fast-paced team that can stand toe-to-toe with any in the division on their day, but Frank Lampard’s men blew them away with an impressive display.
Phillips picked out midfield counterpart Kante as a brilliant performer from the weekend and explained that he made it look effortless.
Leeds’ star Phillips is a super talent in a deep-lying midfield position and has stepped up so quickly to top-flight level, but World Cup winner Kante is viewed by many as the best defensive midfielder around right now.
“I think Kante was unbelievable during that game. He was everywhere, didn’t look like he broke a sweat,” Phillips told BBC Radio Leeds.
“Literally any second ball that dropped he was there. Any 50-50 he was there. He was at the right place at the right time, every single time. Without Kante they are not the same team.”
Lampard deserves huge credit for putting Kante into a defensive role this season, as he’s a monster in front of the defence in breaking up play and protecting the backline.
The 29-year-old is back to looking like one of the best midfielders in Europe with his displays so far this season and he’s a nightmare for opponents to face with his relentless work-rate, something that Phillips rightfully highlighted.
It says a lot that even a Leeds team renowned for their energy and ability to outrun teams couldn’t deal with Kante.
