Andreas Christensen has pledged his long-term allegiance to Chelsea with just over 12 months remaining on the deal that binds him currently, speaking to the club website.
Christensen’s contract runs out next June and there is no indication yet of an extension offer.
A report from the Telegraph last month did suggest the 25-year-old was to be presented with a new agreement, but nothing has yet come to pass.
Based on his performances in the second half of this season, very few would deserve a reward more.
Following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in late January, the central defender has been one of Chelsea’s standout players and arguably their most improved.
“I’ve shown that I’m here for the long run”, said Christensen about his Blues future.
“I’ve been here almost nine, 10 years now.
“I’ve never doubted my decision (to come to Chelsea) and I’ve always been here for the long run.
“I accept that the club sometimes changes managers, and that can make it hard to always be in the team.
“There have not been any talks (on a contract extension) yet, but like I said, I’m in this for the long run and I always have been.
“I feel like this is my second home. Denmark will always be my home, but Chelsea will always be my place.”
The Danish international joined Chelsea as a teenager in 2012, where he rose through the ranks and came in contention with the first team.
Two successful loan spells with Borussia Monchengladbach stood him in good stead for his return to Stamford Bridge.
However, it wasn’t until this campaign that Christensen has truly asserted himself as a regular in the Blues backline.
He can probably thank Thiago Silva’s injury against Tottenham Hotspur for gaining a good run in the side under Tuchel.
But there was nothing lucky about his displays and is now completely trusted to feature in the big occasions.
With all the talk of Chelsea wanting to sign another centre-back, why can’t they just tie down one that’s already on their doorstep?
