Many Chelsea fans will have been raising their eyebrows when Lampard’s team selection was released before the Tottenham game.
The young manager changed the system from his favoured 4-3-3 to a 3-4-3 to combat the threat posed by Spurs in behind. Marcus Alonso started for the first time in several games, and Jorginho, a player who has received huge plaudits this season, was left out.

Mason Mount and Willian played either side of Abraham up-front and both were extremely impressive in what was a commanding win. Frank Lampard outsmarted a manager with far more experience in big games and general management, but what made the difference?
One thing that caused Tottenham problems was the high press employed by the Chelsea side. It gave the North London club no time on the ball and resulted in many possession turnovers throughout the game. Not only this, but the press allowed Chelsea to control the pace of the game.

Choosing to play a system with wing-backs was another key part of Lampard’s masterclass. Marcus Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta suit a system where they have less defensive responsibility and can make more of an impact further up the pitch.
The perfect example of this resulted in the second goal. A long ball over the top saw Alonso escape in behind the defence. He was then clattered by the Spurs goalkeeper and earned his side a penalty.

The ability to adapt the system your team plays depending on the opponent is a huge indicator of managerial quality. Lampard showed this on Sunday and is once again looking like a fantastic appointment.
