Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes explained how impressed he’d been with Mason Mount’s performances with Chelsea this season.

Speaking to the official United magazine, Fernandes was listing potential players of the year from outside Old Trafford’s walls.

The Portuguese talisman, alongside fellow countryman Ruben Dias, are firm favourites to pick up this award.

Other high hitters like Harry Kane, Ilkay Gundogan, and Kevin De Bruyne are also in the running.

But Fernandes felt that Mount deserved recognition for his contribution towards Chelsea’s campaign.

He said: “For example, I really like Mason Mount – he’s been consistent from the beginning of the season but, if people will watch numbers, he’s not had so many goals as other players or assists as other players but, for me, as a performance he’s been really, really top.”

Magic Mount

Fernandes is correct in that Mount’s numbers might not blow his rival’s out of the water.

In 33 Premier League appearances, the 22-year-old has managed six goals and provided six assists.

In comparison, Fernandes is on 17 goals and 11 assists in 34 league outings.

However, where Mount may lack in figures, he more than makes up for in general impact with the Blues.

His work rate and energy is a joy to behold, always encompassed with a touch of class.

Thomas Tuchel didn’t take long to recognise the England international’s importance.

After dropping Mount for his maiden game in charge, Chelsea’s coach instantly reinstalled him into the starting XI.

It’s highly unlikely that the Blues young midfielder will earn the POTY honour, such is the quality of competition.

However, the gratitude he’s receiving from across the board is almost as big an achievement.
