Chelsea star Mason Mount has admitted that he needs to improve his goalscoring record.
For club and country, Mount is an integral player. The 22-year-old is a regular for Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea, as well as Gareth Southgate’s England. It’s obvious that his work rate, positioning, and creativity plays a big role for both managers.
However, the attacking midfielder is still lacking in one department.
The Blues academy graduate is yet to score in 10 club appearances across all competitions this season. His overall senior record as a Chelsea player is 17 goals in 117 games, too.
Mount is understandably on this year’s 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or and is proof that not everything should be judged on statistics.
Even Mount does admit, though, that he needs to score more.
“It’s about time I got on the scoresheet. I’m getting in the right areas but it’s just not falling for me. Hopefully when the first one goes in the floodgates will open,” Mount said.
Mount record should serve as motivation to him
Paul Scholes recently claimed that Mount needs to score more goals, so perhaps the Chelsea man has heard these comments.
There is so much to love about Mount’s game. He looks a Blues captain in the making. It does feel like he can elevate himself to the next level if he improves his record in front of goal, though.
In fairness, all teammates will know how important he is on the pitch.
More goals needed
With Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both going off injured in midweek against Malmo, it may be time for others in the squad to step up in the final third. Of course, everyone is still waiting for an official club announcement about the fitness situation of the duo.
It may fall on the likes of Mount, Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech to contribute with goals and assists.
