John Terry and Jorginho react after Chelsea star wins the AFCON last night

Edouard Mendy earned the love and congratulations from several members of the Chelsea family following his Africa Cup of Nations triumph yesterday evening.

Mendy got his gloved hands on the top prize last night after Senegal defeated Egypt via a penalty shootout.

Story of the show piece event

Neither side could break the deadlock in normal time, so the final had to be decided by spot-kicks.

Chelsea’s number one saved from Mohanad Lasheen’s effort, allowing Liverpool’s Sadio Mane the opportunity to seal continental glory.

Mane had missed from 12-yards earlier in the match, but more than made up for his previous error to secure Senegal’s first-ever AFCON victory.

Whilst the Premier League forward was named the Player of the Tournament, one of his teammates also swooped up an individual accolade.

Mendy the marvelous

Thanks to keeping another clean sheet in the finale, Mendy collected the competition’s Best Goalkeeper award.

In total, the 29-year-old kept five shutouts, with none conceded during the group stages.

Understandably, the Chelsea ‘keeper cemented his country’s success into the history books by uploading a post to Instagram.

The caption ‘History’ accompanied a photo of him kissing the trophy and another of his penalty heroics.

A sea of infectious replies swallowed the comment section below, mainly from a blue persuasion.

Amongst the joyous responses were fellow Stamford Bridge stars Antonio Rudiger, Jorginho, Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta.

John Terry also got in on the act.

2022 has already been quite a year for Mendy, and we’ve hardly even started February.

Alongside his AFCON title, he was also named the Best Goalkeeper by FIFA last month.

Add to that UEFA’s equivalent honour, a Champions League and UEFA Super Cup winners medal, Chelsea’s supreme shot-stopper is building up quite a collection.

He could add the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and another European conquest before the campaign concludes.

Not sure you’ll have much room left in the cabinet, Edouard!
