Lampard explains why Christian Pulisic did not start against Liverpool

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has explained why Christian Pulisic did not start in their last two games as he prepares for two important incoming matches.

The 21-year-old made an immediate impact when he came on in the second half with a goal and an assist.

It was not enough as the home team eventually won 5-3, but Pulisic’s performance is certainly one of the few positives from Chelsea’s perspective ahead of Sunday’s game against Wolverhampton and the FA Cup final against Arsenal.

The manager’s decision to bench Pulisic raised some questions among some fans, however, considering he has arguably been Chelsea’s most in-form player since the Premier League return.

Lampard reasoned that the American did not start in the last two games because he did not want to take the risk of further injury, but still called his cameo “fantastic”.

“Christian would have stayed in the team but he had a small injury in his thigh that kept him out against Manchester United,” he told the media (quoted via the Metro)

“Today I felt it was a risk to play him for 90 minutes given we have two huge games coming up.

“When he came on he looked great so I’m really pleased with that in terms of his individual performance. We’ve since that since the restart when he’s been fit and firing he’s looked some player.

“So as I say disappointed I haven’t been able to start him in the last two games but we’ve got them coming up.”
