Ross Barkley has found himself in the negative headlines again. Frank Lampard has accused him of showing a ‘lack of professionalism’.
Lampard’s comments are concerning Barkley being pictured shirtless in a nightclub while players were away for the international break. The midfielder has been carrying an ankle injury in recent weeks, and the Chelsea boss is keen for Barkley to work hard to regain his fitness and potentially into the matchday squad.
As reported by Sky Sports, Lampard said: ”Ross knows how I felt about the first headline. I backed him then and I still back him now. But he showed a lack of professionalism as far as I’m concerned.
“It’s not something that I want to come down hard on because I understand all my players are humans and have lives. I don’t police every moment of their lives. So I don’t think it’s a terrible thing that he’s done.”
It seems the Chelsea boss will not hold a grudge over Barkley, but felt that his behavior warrants an exemption from the match-day squad for the crucial Champions League tie against Valencia on Wednesday night.
Barkley started the season well for Chelsea after a brilliant pre-season. However, following a couple of injury problems and a drop in form, the England international has lost his place in the starting line up to players like Mason Mount.
At just 25-years-old, the midfielder may be at a crossroads in his career. He must make an impression on Lampard when he comes back into the side, or risk losing his place for good, as even more young midfield starlets make their way into the fray.
