Mason Mount has praised tireless performance from Chelsea teammate N’Golo Kante who made his first Premier League start under Thomas Tuchel in the 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday.
The England international’s second-half equaliser from the penalty spot secured the point for Chelsea.
Mount was arguably the visitors’ best attacker on the pitch, making run forwards and producing a few magical moments.
In terms of defensive contribution, however, Kante was by far the busiest Chelsea player.
The France international made seven tackles and four interceptions — winning the possession 13 times throughout the game.
Mount is clearly pleased to have the midfield dynamo behind him in midfield again.
“He definitely did a lot more than me today,” Mount told Chelsea TV about Kante’s performance.
“He doesn’t stop running, we know how N’Golo is like — winning every ball.
“It’s absolutely brilliant to have him back in [the team]. [He’s] Unbelievable to play with and a big character around the group.
“He doesn’t say much but what he does physically and how he goes about himself, he’s a massive character.”
The disappointing draw aside, Tuchel will be relieved to see Kante back at his best ahead of the difficult run of fixtures, starting with Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid.
As highlighted by Mount, Kante is not merely a midfield engine, but also a leader who sets the standard on the pitch.
