Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich made “the right decision” to sell the club amid an “unsustainable” situation.

Having previously handed over the control of the club to the trustees of Chelsea’s charitable foundation, the Russian-Israeli billionaire eventually confirmed his decision to put the club up for sale through an official statement on Wednesday.

Some of the fans might have expected it, but to many others, it came as a surprise.

Abramovich mentioned that the decision was made in the interest of the club, and Masters clearly agrees with that.

“It is the right decision,” the Premier League chief told Financial Times’ Business of Football Summit (via Eurosport) about Abramovich’s sale of Chelsea.

“The situation has escalated incredibly quickly over the last seven days, and he has come to the right conclusion that it is unsustainable in the current environment.

“It is a welcome decision and obviously for the sake of everyone, including the fans, the sooner the selling process concludes and completes, the sooner everyone will have certainty.”

Joe Ravitch, who has been asked by Abramovich to help find a buyer for the club, recently claimed that the Chelsea owner will take “enough time” to find the “best” new steward for the club.

According to Masters, however, it is possible for Abramovich to conclude the deal in less than two weeks.

“I think the quickest one we have ever done is 10 days, but that’s not to say that that record cannot be beaten,” he explained.

“Normally it will take a number of weeks but that will depend on the complexity of the deal really and the number of potential owners.”
