The 24-year-old will officially join Chelsea from Leipzig on July 1, and will not play for Leipzig in their Champions League fixture in August, RB Leipzig’s official website confirmed.

Although both parties have agreed not to disclose the transfer fee, Leipzig managing director Mintzlaff has had positive things to say about the negotiation process.

Mintzlaff told their official website: “Negotiations with those responsible at Chelsea were always very respectful, fair and constructive.

“We only wish Timo the best for his challenge in London.”

He said that he is proud of the transfer despite also calling it “a bitter loss”.

“We also consider this transfer a great compliment for our young club,” he added.

“We are proud to have formed a top international striker in just a few years, who now has the quality for an international top club like Chelsea FC.”

While Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia who has also played the role of chief negotiator in recent years described Werner as “a rare mix of being young and exciting and yet established and proven”.

“We can’t wait to have Timo on board, but until then we wish him and RB Leipzig all the best for the rest of this season,” she added on Chelsea’s official website.
