American businessman Woody Johnson is reportedly about to make a last-minute offer to buy Chelsea.
According to The Sun, the 74-year-old will make a bid in the region of £2billion to complete a takeover of the London club.
It is understood Johnson, who’s a co-owner of the New York Jets, believes he’s got the relevant connections in London to clinch the new ownership after previously serving as the US Ambassador to the UK.
Interestingly, the report adds Johnson hopes to seal a deal ahead of other investors actually before Friday’s deadline. It sounds like the American is hell-bent on wrapping up a takeover before the end of the week.
If successful with a takeover, he’s confident he can raise Chelsea’s already global profile in the US market. You’d suspect American Blues attacker Christian Pulisic may have a role to play in that, too.
It’s worth highlighting the Saudi Media Group have reportedly already made a £2.7billion bid in their attempts to buy the club from current owner Roman Abramovich, who won’t receive a penny from any sale due to government sanctions. The Sun counters this by saying Johnson still remains optimistic he’s got the profile to beat their offer with a smaller bid, though.

Chelsea clock is ticking
Yes, Friday’s deadline for new bids is looming.
It seems bizarre to think Johnson can swoop in and complete a deal before Friday, but who knows what to predict with this club right now.
Hopefully, Blues supporters will receive light at the end of the tunnel soon and a clearer idea about how they will move forward under new ownership.
