Report: Chelsea consider recalling 19-year-old in January amid Chilwell's injury
Chelsea might consider recalling on-loan star Ian Maatsen amid Ben Chilwell’s injury situation, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law.
Chelsea plan to reassess the injury after the six-week period to decide whether the England international would need surgery.
In the worst-case scenario, Law claims, Chilwell might be out for the rest of the season.
So will Chelsea sign a replacement in the January transfer window? According to Law, it seems unlikely.
“I don’t see them going into the market in January for a left-back,” Law told the London is Blue Podcast.
“I thought it was very interesting that against Manchester United, they finished the game with Reece [James] at left wing-back and Pulisic at right wing-back.
“Tuchel already referenced in the press conference about Pulisic’s ability to play as a right wing-back.”
Maatsen’s January Chelsea recall being discussed, says Law
Law argued that Marcos Alonso was not convincing enough against Manchester United to be the first-choice option at left wing-back for the rest of the season.
“It’s a problem for Chelsea, but I’d be surprised if it is solved by signing a player,” the journalist added.
“Maybe they’d bring in Maatsen back. That would be an option for them.
“It’s clearly being discussed, and they’ll clearly be able to do it if they want to.
“But is he ready to go into a Premier League title charge? I’d assume if he’s brought back, it’s to play in the cups, the Club World Cup, and things like that.”
Maatsen is currently on loan at Championship side Coventry City.
The 19-year-old has been a regular at the loan club, having missed just two games out of 20 league matches.
Interestingly, Coventry also mostly plays in a back-three system, which means Maatsen would likely not need much time to adapt to Tuchel’s system if he was to be recalled.
