Report: Chelsea insiders believe attacker could improve loads next season after pre-season with Tuchel
Chelsea insiders reportedly feel like it’s a crucial pre-season for Romelu Lukaku this summer.
According to The Telegraph, there are people inside Chelsea that believe Lukaku could improve loads if he gets a full pre-season to work with his manager Thomas Tuchel.
The 29-year-old striker’s had an underwhelming campaign where he’s come in for plenty of criticism. For example, Gary Neville recently said he can’t believe how badly it’s gone for the Blues centre-forward this year on his return to English football.
He ended the season with 15 goals in 44 games across all competitions. Overall, he’s not looked like a £97.5million player.
Crucial pre-season for Lukaku
If Lukaku’s to turn his Chelsea career around next season, you feel the summer is absolutely vital.
In fairness, he re-signed for the Blues last summer mid-August and was thrown straight into the action without much time training in Tuchel’s group. He scored three goals in three Premier League games before his inconsistent form hit.
Fabrizio Romano reports Lukaku wants to hear Tuchel’s plans for him next season before making a decision on his future. The Belgian attacker is still under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2026, though, so Chelsea are firmly in the driving seat.
Tuchel needs to make some alterations if he’s to start next year with Lukaku as a star player in the XI.
It’s yet another season where no Chelsea player has got anywhere near to scoring 20 goals in the Premier League. Diego Costa in the 2016/17 season was the last Blues star to achieve that individual feat.
Tuchel’s side may need a prolific goalscorer to close the gap to teams above them, so it’s frustrating that a proven finisher in Lukaku couldn’t provide the answer this year.
Mason Mount (11) was the only Chelsea player to reach double digits for league goals this season.
