Frank Lampard and Petr Cech reportedly made a trip to Germany in February to convince RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner to move to Stamford Bridge.
According to a report from the Telegraph, Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia gave her full backing to Lampard and Cech making the trip which clarified the club’s willingness to meet Werner’s £53million release clause.
Lampard and Cech’s visit impressed Werner, his family and his representatives, while the Chelsea pair were encouraged by Werner’s “driven but humble character”, claimed the report.
Interestingly, as well as offering advice as technical and performance advisor, Cech also played a role as a translator since both Werner’s father and his agent Karlheinz Forster are not fluent in English.
The former goalkeeper is famously fluent in several languages including German.
In the meeting, Lampard reportedly outlined his plans for the next season and talked about the intention to challenge for titles once again.
The report further added that Lampard, Cech and Werner have been in close contact since the meeting which has really helped in securing the reported transfer.
Werner who has raked an impressive 31 goals in all competitions, 25 league goals from just 29 Bundesliga appearances, has reportedly agreed to sign a five-year contract which would see him earn around £200,000-a-week.
