Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu has played his last game for loan club RB Leipzig according to a report from Germany.
It has been a season to forget for the 19-year-old.
When it was first announced in July, the loan move was greeted with enthusiasts and high expectations. RB Leipzig is a great project for young talents under Julian Nagelsmann after all.
However, in the first half of the season, the Welsh international made just two appearances from the bench. His first appearance came on as late as October 30 against Wolfsburg in DFB Pokal.
It got worse for Ampadu as Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff confirmed Chelsea did not have the option to recall him in January.
With almost 75% of the season completed for Bundesliga teams, Ampadu has had just one 90-minute appearance where he starred in Leipzig’s away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League in February.
And German publication Bild claims it would be Ampadu’s last appearance for Leipzig, pointing his recurring back problem as the main reason.
The report said Ampadu is not taking the risk of further straining his back and has already looked forward to rejoining Frank Lampard’s squad for pre-season.
Ampadu was also reportedly angry when he was left out on the bench in the game against Schalke, right after his impressive display against Spurs in the previous game.
Chelsea must learn from this experience as they have just wasted precious development phase for one of the club’s best prospects.
It was not entirely Chelsea’s fault, but failing to insert an option to recall in January has caused further damage to Ampadu’s progression.
