Chelsea are considering a few centre-backs as potential summer purchases amid risks of losing Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, according to Goal.
The centre-back pair’s respective contract with the club has entered its final year.
And as it stands, Goal claims that talks over new contracts are not advanced — which is a surprise.
While both Christensen and Rudiger are still on their summer holiday following their involvement at the Euro 2020, you would expect that Chelsea would have been in constant contact with their representatives given their key roles in Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
Rudiger was one of the first names on the manager’s team sheet last season, and considering Thiago Silva’s age, Christensen will likely feature a lot if he stays for the new season.
Their key roles and contract situation mean that Rudiger and Christensen are in stronger negotiating positions compared to the club, however — and could easily demand more favourable deals.
After all, it seems likely that they will eventually get better deals, whether it’s from Chelsea or other clubs next summer.
Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have also made a list of potential centre-back signings, Goal added.
The list includes Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, and Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule.
Giving these two new contracts should be the priority for Chelsea and arguably cheaper options compared to bringing in a new defender.
However, Chelsea might still make a defensive signing even if both Rudiger and Christensen agree to extend their stay since Kurt Zouma is reportedly close to leaving the club, according to Telefoot journalist Julien Maynard.
