Report: Which Chelsea bidders the UK government are in support of, Raine Group may decide by end of the week

One of Chelsea’s potential buyers already has the support of the UK government.

According to The Guardian, a consortium led by Sir Martin Broughton and Lord Sebastian Coe has support from within Westminster circles.

The report explains, as many of you know that are following the takeover story, that the government will eventually need to approve Chelsea’s sale to go into new hands. They’ll intervene to ensure no money goes to current owner Roman Abramovich once the preferred new owner is selected by the Raine Group, who are the US bank overseeing the takeover.

Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium are one of numerous bidders trying to buy Chelsea, albeit some Premier League clubs may reportedly be angry about his move.

Significantly, it’s the Raine Group that will put forward the club’s new owners before the government green lights a takeover. Therefore, it seems like the government’s approval of Broughton and Coe counts for little at this stage.

The Guardian adds that the Raine Group could make a final decision on the preferred Chelsea buyers by the end of the week, but they’ll need the next 48 hours to run smoothly.

Chelsea clock ticking

With the international break now underway, Blues supporters will have nothing better to do other than constantly refresh their screens waiting for an update on a takeover.

In fairness, all every fan wants is a new ownership that will put the club’s best interests at heart.

Many are fearful of life post-Abramovich, which is understandable given the success under him.

Chelsea fans will need to make the leap together, though.
