Rio Ferdinand explained that Chelsea-bound Romelu Lukaku had said he was feeling ‘hungry’ for success this season.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel, Ferdinand shared snippets of the exchange he has been having with Lukaku recently.

The Belgian international is on the verge of a club-record return to Stamford Bridge, half a decade after he set sail for new opportunities.

After a summer of trying to identify and ultimately sign the ideal striker to lead Thomas Tuchel’s side this term, Chelsea have finally settled upon a man the Premier League knows so well.

Out for vengeance

Despite the 28-year-old’s stature amongst the game’s modern-day great centre-forwards, there will still be certain supporters or pundits who are going to question his quality.

He struggled during his first stint with the Blues and had mixed fortunes at Manchester United.

However, Ferdinand revealed that Lukaku was ready to prove all his haters wrong and show the world what he is now made of.

“I’ve spoken to him recently and he’s hungry man,” said the former Manchester United defender.

“He hasn’t confirmed or said that he’s signing for Chelsea to me, but this season he said he’s hungry to me.

“A lot of greatness comes from having fuel. By that I mean, having doubters and proving them wrong. He’s got a whole stadium full at United who doubted him.”

Can Rom repeat his records

Lukaku has come a long way from the boy who failed to score in 15 appearances for Chelsea.

His record for every team after that failed stint is pretty remarkable.

17 goals in 38 games for West Bromwich Albion, 87 in 166 for Everton, 42 in 96 for Manchester United, and 64 in 96 for Inter Milan.

This will mean very little to him unless he can recreate these numbers in a Chelsea shirt.
