Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea have internally discussed hiring Luciano Spalletti as their new permanent manager.

He told GiveMeSport that the Blues could move in the coming weeks for the 64-year-old as he currently focuses on current club Napoli.

The Italian side are currently closing in on winning Serie A after a dominant campaign inspired by Victor Osimhen.

They did recently endure the heartbreak of being dumped out of the Champions League to AC Milan, when there was real optimism about their chances.

Meanwhile at Stamford Bridge, discussions have been ongoing about who will take the permanent job.

Chelsea discussing Spalletti

Reports over the weekend saw Julian Nagelsmann pull out of the race to become the next boss. He was reportedly concerned at the recruitment process taking so long.

It now seems as if Mauricio Pochettino is the favourite for the role, after reportedly impressing in recent interviews.

However, Jacobs has claimed that the Blues could still approach Spalletti over the role in the coming weeks.

He said: “Luciano Spalletti is another name that has been spoken about. But at the moment, he’s fully focused on Napoli and winning the Scudetto, and is not necessarily attainable, therefore, to approach or speak to at this point. So Chelsea do want to move in the coming weeks to get that name.

“Because even if that name starts next season, they still want to lock down the name, which helps stabilise the club. And then there’s a name that they can take in the coming weeks into the transfer market ahead of the window opening which is important as well. But this has always been about Chelsea not rushing.”

Whoever is to be named the new manager will be looking to be handed the job as soon as possible in order to get to work on the broken squad.
