Tammy Abraham injury intensifies the need for a new striker at Chelsea
Chelsea’s top scorer Tammy Abraham suffered an ankle injury late on in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Arsenal. The Blues forward had to be assisted off the pitch after the game and could be out for a while. If he is set for a spell on the sidelines, a new striker simply has to come in at Stamford Bridge.
As reported by Sky Sports, when asked about the injury scare, Lampard said: ”He has had ice on his ankle, but I haven’t spoken to him yet, so I don’t know.”
The extent of the injury is unclear but it proves just how much the Blues need reinforcements up front. The thought of Michy Batshuayi leading the line is not a nice one, especially after he missed another great chance yesterday.
The Chelsea boss has made his desire to sign another striker clear. Abraham, even when fully fit, cannot be expected to carry the goalscoring burden alone and needs some help. Several names have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge but nothing seems to be materialising.
There are just nine days left of the January transfer window and the possibility of making no signings is becoming a concerning reality for Chelsea fans. The Blues are heading into a difficult set of fixtures and need a top-class striker to lead the line or they could be in real trouble.
Within weeks, Lampard could see his side knocked out of the Champions League and out of the qualification places in the league. Other problems also need addressing, but a new striker has to be the first point of call.
