Thomas Tuchel has claimed that Chelsea player Saul Niguez has reacted well this week in training after an underwhelming debut for the club.

Saul, 26, joined the Blues at the closing stages of the summer window on a season-long loan from Atletico Madrid.

The midfielder made his Premier League debut in last weekend’s 3-0 home win against Villa, but was substituted off at half time.

It was an eye-opening first 45 minutes in English football for Saul, who was put under real pressure in the centre of the park by an opponent that pressed high with real intensity and physicality.

Despite a disappointing start, Saul has so much elite experience from his Atletico career to now rely on.

Tuchel has given the Spaniard praise for his reaction in training:

“It just needs a bit of time [adapting to the Premier League] and the best thing to react is what he did. He trains good and he trains with intensity and this will prepare for the next time he is on the pitch for us,” Tuchel said in his Friday press conference, as quoted by Football London.

Saul Niguez should get chance next Wednesday

Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham this Sunday in the Premier League is certainly not the game to put Saul back in the team. This is a London derby that could have real fireworks.

However, Saul should get a chance a few days later next Wednesday to make up for his slow start at Villa.

The Blues host Villa again in the third round of the Carabao Cup, so it’s a great opportunity for the Atletico loanee to get rid of some demons.

The left-footer can bring some extra guile and balance to Tuchel’s XI, but he’s searching for the kind of form that made him one of La Liga’s best talents a few years ago.
