Frank Lampard has confirmed Christian Pulisic won’t be available for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle United, with Thiago Silva unlikely to travel with the squad.
The Blues could top the Premier League table with a win at St James’ Park on Saturday, even if it is only temporarily.
A win would be a big statement from the new Chelsea side after a rather disappointing start to the season. But they will have to fight for the three points without a few key players.
“Pulisic is not fit for Newcastle but he’s stepped up his training slowly,” Lampard told reporters in his press conference on Thursday (via Chelsea’s official website).
“It’s been quite a problematic injury, so we weill stay cautious with Christian and make sure we manage him back to full fitness.
“Kai Havertz is back after his period of self-isolation and he has been training this week.”
Lampard added that the Germany international tested negative for Covid-19 a couple days ago but is still trying to get his fitness back.
Meanwhile Silva, who is already back in London, is unlikely to be in the squad for the weekend’s game after playing two full 90 minutes in Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Uruguay.
“He probably won’t travel to Newcastle due to the logistics ad the travelling he’s done with Brazil,” Lampard added.
Another Chelsea player who might still have fitness issues is Ben Chilwell, who suffered a back injury during England’s defeat to Belgium last Sunday.
While Lampard admitted he has yet to speak to the defender, he is hoping that Chilwell will be available for the game.
“He [Chilwell] stayed with England and was on the bench last night,” the manager explained.
“He’s been improving and getting fantastic care with England so I’m more positive he’ll be okay.”
