Chelsea midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko is facing uncertainty over his future at Stamford Bridge after being left without a squad number.

The Blues have recently announced the new squad numbers for the 2020/21 season, but the 26-year-old whose loan spell at Monaco ended this summer is not on the list.

Bakayoko is not exactly alone in this situation with a few other returning loanees have also been excluded from the squad including Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater.

You would expect these players would leave the club whether permanently or on loan, but Bakayoko is arguably in a rather difficult situation.

The France international has previously opened up about his desire to return to Serie A with AC Milan, but Italian side are reportedly reluctant to pay Chelsea’s asking price despite their interest.

“I don’t think we need a new midfielder, as for the moment we are fine as we are,” Milan director Paolo Maldini told Sport Italia (via Football Italia) last week.

“Of course, Bakayoko is a very good player.”

According to a report from Calciomercato, Chelsea have refused to back down from their demand which is around €30million (£27.7m).

From Chelsea’s standpoint, it makes sense that they would want to recoup most of the £40m they paid to Monaco in 2017 (Goal) after their summer spending spree.

Milan, however, have just signed another midfielder in Sandro Tonali from Brescia and making another big midfield signing might be out of their reach financially.

It is a complicated circumstance that puts Bakayoko in limbo and without clear plan for the 2020/21 season.
