Chelsea owners will hold a meeting on Sunday to discuss the future of underfire manager Graham Potter following Saturday’s defeat to Aston Villa, according to journalist David Ornstein.

The Blues now sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and Potter is, once again, fighting for his job.

He is running out of excuses, too.

Chelsea are still dealing with a few key injuries, such as Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, and Raheem Sterling, but they should have enough qualities to defeat Villa.

Ornstein claims that while Potter is likely to lead the team until Liverpool’s upcoming visit to Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea hierarchy may make a decision after that.

“I think the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-led ownership at Stamford Bridge will be discussing these matters today,” Ornstein told NBC Sports when speaking about Potter’s situation at Chelsea.

“I don’t think it’s particularly unusual to hold meetings the day after a match, but of course given the circumstances, Graham Potter’s future will be on the agenda.

“Let’s make it clear, they [the owners] want him [Potter] to succeed. They went to great lengths to bring him in from Brighton and to great expense as well.

“They intended to judge him in years, not months or games. But clearly, this is not good.

“They wanted to see progress, but this currently is not progress.

“As things stand, Potter will be in charge of the Liverpool game on Tuesday but [the owners will have] a big decision to make after that. They have Wolves then Real Madrid in the Champions League.

“Will Potter still be in charge of [those games]? I think ideally they would do nothing before the end of the season but they’ll be monitoring this process all the time.

“They’ve been linked with other managers, the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Mauricio Pochettino, and Luis Enrique.

“They will of course have a list, they’re watching these things all the time, but they’ve got a lot on their plate, including [summer transfer plans] and contract renewals.”
