Tuchel says Chelsea player deserves opportunity to play against Tottenham Hotspur

Thomas Tuchel was full of praise for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga whom he believes deserve the opportunity to shine amid Edouard Mendy’s absence.

Well, not every team has the luxury of having the world’s most expensive goalkeeper as a backup option to The Best FIFA men’s goalkeeper.

While Chelsea failed to keep a clean sheet in the last two games, Arrizabalaga has done quite well in the last couple of weeks.

The Blues conceded 13 shots on target in the last four games with Arrizabalaga starting in goal, and the Spain international managed to save 11 of them.

It seems unlikely that these performances will help him move ahead of Mendy in the pecking order, but Tuchel has still been impressed by the goalkeeper’s performances.

“I’m very pleased with him since day one — and it’s getting better and better,” the German told Chelsea TV ahead of the Tottenham Hotspur game.

“He is a fantastic team player, a fantastic character, and a very, very good goalkeeper.

“I’m happy that he now has the chance to prove it because Edou is in Cameroon, trying to give his best for his country.

“This is only fair. If he was an [outfielder], he would have had a lot of chances to prove [himself], get minutes, and show how good he is.

“It’s very rare opportunities for the goalkeeper, who is competing from behind against the number one, so, it’s only fair that he has this chance.

“And I’m happy with what he’s doing here on a daily basis.”

Mendy seems to be the better shot-stopper of the two, but Arrizabalaga is clearly more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

This could help Chelsea control the game against Spurs the way they did in the two legs of the Carabao Cup semifinal.
