Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he demands a lot from Ruben Loftus-Cheek, in particular, because of his incredible potential.
Similar to Trevoh Chalobah, Loftus-Cheek has exceeded earlier expectations and established himself as a reliable option for the Blues this season.
Tuchel clearly sees him as a midfielder, either a number six or a number eight, rather than an attacking player — which according to Loftus-Cheek himself is his natural position.
Interestingly, earlier this month, Tuchel argued that the 25-year-old is not setting the bar high enough for himself despite his potential.
He has now explained why he is very demanding of the midfielder.
“I did not say it because I was not happy before,” the German said during the press conference on Friday.
“I would always like to repeat it, even now, because I see the potential, and I think that he knows about his potential.
“As an academy player, everybody was very aware of his potential, but the next step for him is to show it to everybody.
“Everybody in the stadium must go home knowing how good, how strong Ruben is.
“That is the next step, to actually put the potential on the street and drive the car as fast as possible.”
The Chelsea manager also pointed out that Loftus-Cheek has earned his spot on the team on merit, despite facing fierce competition for midfield spots.
“I can only repeat, I am still happy with Ruben,” he added.
“He was part of a fantastic performance against Juventus — and this is what we expect because we can expect it from him.
“We will stay very demanding because of his potential.”
