Tuchel says versatile 21-year-old may have found his best position in Chelsea system
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said he was pleased by Ethan Ampadu’s performance as a centre-back during the 2-1 pre-season win over Club America in Las Vegas.
The Blues secured their first win during the pre-season tour in the United States thanks to Mason Mount’s fine late winner.
While it is not exactly a convincing victory, Tuchel was able to give many players, including those who spent last season on loan, the opportunity to impress, and some of them certainly did.
After the game, Tuchel highlighted how Ampadu, who is known for his versatility, may have found his best position in this Chelsea side.
“Ethan did very well in a good position for him in the middle of a back three,” the manager said after the game (via Chelsea’s official website).
“He plays a lot of vertical passes, he did not play from left to right but only penetrated through the lines of the opponent with his passes and sometimes with his dribbling.
“He was very active, and it was a good match for him. He also is training very well.”
Interestingly, while playing in various roles during his loan spell at Venezia last season, the 21-year-old mostly played as a defensive midfielder in Serie A.
Given Chelsea’s tendency to build from the back, his excellent ball-playing skills could prove useful to the team as a centre-back, especially in the middle of the back three.
Obviously, Thiago Silva is still the first choice in this position, but at 37, even the Brazil international will have to manage his workload, which could give Ampadu plenty of game time.
