Tuchel's three potential new defensive options spotted in Chelsea pre-season
Several young Chelsea players have reported back for pre-season following their loan spells as the Blues begin preparation for the 2022/23 season.
The pre-season has already started for the Chelsea players who were not on international duty last month, including those who were away on loan last season.
Ben Chilwell, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Hakim Ziyech, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Trevoh Chalobah, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and a few other players are first to report back among Thomas Tuchel’s squad members last season.
Meanwhile, Dujon Sterling, Levi Colwill, Ian Maatsen, as well as Tino Anjorin, are the new faces in Saturday’s training session.
It is quite interesting that the first three names are all defenders that could potentially earn first-team spots under Tuchel considering Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s departures and Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso’s potential exits.
Sterling is a right back and spent last season at Blackpool. Colwill, a young centre-back, impressed at Championship side Huddersfield Town. Meanwhile, Maatsen mostly operated in the left wing-back position at Coventry City last term.
These three will have an extra week to impress the manager compared to other returning loanees.
On the other hand, the likes of Conor Gallagher, Billy Gilmour, and Armando Broja are expected to join the first group in the United States for the pre-season tour starting 9 June along with other Chelsea internationals.
