'Very rare to find': Tuchel claims Chelsea have a player in their squad whose skillset is almost unique
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel claims that he’s working with a player in Kalidou Koulibaly who has a “very rare” quality.
Koulibaly, 31, became Chelsea’s second signing of the summer behind Raheem Sterling when he joined on a four-year deal from Napoli.
The new Blues defender is a commanding centre-back that’s come to fill the void left by the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.
Thankfully, he’s a very experienced player with know-how at the highest level. He’s joined familiar faces in Edouard Mendy and Jorginho, too.
Koulibaly very rare quality
Tuchel believes that Chelsea’s new defender has a unique skillset with his combination of physicality in both areas of the pitch.
For certain, the Senegal international is going to add a massive aerial presence. Also, he’s got great acceleration that should serve him well adapting to the Premier League for the first time in his career.
“Kali (Koulibaly) combines a level of quality, talent, level of personality, strength in set pieces – offensively and defensively, heading and the physicality which is very rare to find,” Tuchel said.
“He has played so many matches on the highest level. He knows already many players like Edou (Mendy) and Jorgi (Jorginho). I hope he can make his way very quickly into the team.
“He is training individual, half individual and half with the group.”
This genuinely could turn out to be one of the best pound-for-pound signings in the Premier League this season.
If he settles quickly, Chelsea will have a commanding centre-back that just looks tailor-made to thrive in England given his physical attributes.
Many were very concerned when Rudiger left in the summer to leave a hole in the back three, but Koulibaly’s as much as a like-for-like replacement as you’re going to find.
Chelsea fans can look forward to watch someone unique when it comes to his dominant one-on-one defending. They’ve had plenty of goalscoring defenders over the years, too.
His £33million transfer fee looks a superb bit of business.
