Chelsea have made a lot of signings this summer and some of them have been really cheap ones.
Tosin Adarabioyo, for example, did not cost Chelsea a single penny after joining from Fulham on a free transfer.
With the transfer window still open, the Blues have time to do more business, with exits also possible.
After some recent comments from new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, Ben Chilwell‘s future seems to be in serious doubt.
Looking at them, the club’s decision to sign Renato Veiga from Basel is now starting to come across as a really smart one.

Enzo Maresca has doubts about Ben Chilwell
Chilwell is a left-back, one that has proven to be extremely effective at bombing down the wing and arriving in the box during his time at Chelsea.
However, Maresca is a modern-day coach who prefers it when his full-backs invert, and the Italian is not sure if Chilwell is suited to the role.
Maresca spoke about Chilwell on Tuesday, saying: “His situation is a bit delicate in terms of we are trying to find a solution for him in terms of position. But he probably needs a bit of time. Delicate in terms of finding the right position for him.”
It does not sound great for the 27-year-old, but it is good news for Veiga.
Renato Veiga can play as an inverted full-back
With time and the right coaching, Veiga should easily be able to play as an inverted full-back.
The 21-year-old is a midfielder who can already play in central defence and at left-back. Patrolling around in middle of the park should not be a problem for him.
Chelsea only paid £12m for Veiga. With Maresca potentially needing someone who can play as an inverted full-back on the left, the Portuguese looks like a really smart piece of business, especially after his manager’s comments about Chilwell.
Veiga thinks Chelsea are the biggest club in England, and there is a chance he gets to play for them this season.
At the same time, though, Veiga could also join another outfit on loan for the 2024/25 campaign. But whether he stays or goes this term, as long as Maresca remains at Chelsea and opts to use the inverted full-back tactic, Veiga could become an important player for the Blues in the future.
