Chelsea aren’t going to get every transfer sale correct, largely down to the sheer quantity of players leaving the club in recent windows, but one exit in particular is now starting to look like a big mistake.

There’s been a large turnover of individuals at Chelsea under this current ownership. While the media likes to focus on all the incomings, there’s also been so many departures.

The Blues managed to sell several players in the summer window. In particular, they cashed in on a number of academy graduates to help with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Chelsea could massively regret Lewis Hall sale

Lewis Hall, 20, came through the Chelsea’s academy system at Cobham before becoming a Newcastle United player.

The English youngster spent last year on a season-long loan at St James’ Park. Afterwards, Hall joined Newcastle in the summer on a permanent deal worth an initial £28m fee (BBC).

It’s now looking more and more like this was a poor bit of business from the Blues.

Hall reminded everyone of his quality yet again with a fantastic performance for England’s Under-21s side on Monday night. He was the player of the match after his display in the Young Lions’ 4-1 win over Austria, providing two assists from full-back.

Hall, who’s really growing into his role as a left-back, put in a fantastic display for the U21s. When you look at the current senior England squad, we don’t think it’ll be too long before he’s pushing on that door.

The all-action defender is so energetic up and down the pitch, something he regularly shows now in Newcastle colours.

The Blues made epic blunder

Chelsea can be content with Marc Cucurella and Renato Veiga as their left-backs this season, although the latter is a versatile talent that also plays in midfield. As for Ben Chilwell, he’s been frozen out of the Blues squad under Enzo Maresca.

There’s academy graduates such as Levi Colwill and Reece James with big roles in the first-team squad at Stamford Bridge. However, it does feel like more are now slipping through the exit doors rather than staying.

When it comes to Hall, he’s got the potential to grow into a seriously talented footballer in the coming years.

His £28m transfer fee might feel like a decent price at this moment in time. Let’s wait and see in a couple of years if he does end up developing into a top-class left-back, though.
