Chelsea finished second in their Champions League group, after a 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid, with Roma bearing Qarabag 1-0. Antonio Conte’s side will now face one of the sides that topped their groups, with the likes of PSG and Barcelona possible opponents in the Round of 16. Following Chelsea’s draw at home to Atletico Madrid last night, here are the three players who we thought was man of the match:
3. Andreas Christensen
Last night’s fixture would be a massive test for Christensen, as he is continued to be preferred to David Luiz in Chelsea’s back three. The Dane proved why Conte continues to put faith in him, with a faultless performance. Up against a formidable attacking side, with the likes of Antoine Griezmann in the team, Christensen held his own against one of Europe’s formidable attackers. The 21-year-old continues to impress, and could soon make the position his own at Stamford Bridge.
2. Davide Zappacosta
The surprise starter against Atletico. Marcos Alonso was given a much needed rest, as the Italian filled in at left wing-back. Despite playing an unnatural position, Zappacosta seemed confident attacking and defending. He impressed going forward, and almost gave Chelsea the lead early on, but was denied by a great save from Jan Oblak. The Italian’s performance will give Conte something to think about, as the packed schedule may see Zappacosta play on the left more often.
1. Eden Hazard
This is becoming a recurring theme. The Belgian is in fine form, and continued to impress against Atletico last night. Everything positive from the Blues went through Hazard, and the Atletico defence found it hard to cope with him at times. His attacking prowess led to Chelsea’s equaliser, as his shot was turned into his own goal by Sebastian Savic. Long may his form continue.
