Chelsea coasted to a 2-0 win at home to Brighton on Boxing Day, meaning they are only one point behind Manchester United in second. Goals from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso gave the Blues all three points. Marcos Alonso’s goal saw him score his tenth in 2017 – more than any other Premier League defender. Here’s who impressed against Brighton on Tuesday:
3. Eden Hazard
The Belgian is in fine form in recent weeks, and the only thing missing from his performances are goals. He came very close to adding a third for Chelsea. After countering from a Brighton corner, he was found brilliantly by N’Golo Kante, and after some good footwork from Hazard, his goal-bound shot was cleared off the line by Shane Duffy. Very unfortunate not to add to his goal tally in this game. Hopefully more of the same from him on Saturday against Stoke.
2. Alvaro Morata
Another game, another goal for Alvaro Morata. After missing the goalless draw against Everton through suspension, he returned to the Chelsea line-up and added his 12th goal of the season in all competitions. Lively from the start, he scored his goal moments into the second half with a great header. His attacking presence was sorely missed against Everton, and Chelsea are a much better side with him in the team.
1. Cesar Azpilicueta
For a defender, Azpilicueta sure does love to assist. His cross for Morata’s header was the sixth time he’s assisted the Spaniard this season, and their partnership continues to blossom. Defensively, the Spaniard was also good. Although Brighton did not offer much going forward, Azpilicueta was always alert to stop any potential attacks. Since the start of last season, Azpilicueta has recorded ten assists – more than any other defender in the Premier League. Hopefully, we will see much more of Azpilicueta assisting Morata goals in the future.
