Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens were not the only left wingers on Chelsea’s list of transfer targets over the summer.
Chelsea bought Gittens in early July, with the 25-year-old coming in to replace Jadon Sancho, who headed back to Manchester United after a season-long loan in west London.
However, with Mykhailo Mudryk suspended, the Blues wanted to sign another left winger on top of Gittens.
Chelsea settled on Alejandro Garnacho, their new No.49, but they could have easily signed another wide man instead.

Chelsea made right decision signing Alejandro Garnacho instead of Malick Fofana
During the summer transfer window, the Club World Cup winners also showed interest in Lyon’s Malick Fofana.
In August, it was reported that Chelsea were admirers of Fofana, who scored five goals and provided four assists in 29 league appearances for Lyon last season.
In the end, though, their interest did not materialise into anything and the club eventually went on to sign Garnacho. All things considered, it was probably the right decision.
In Garnacho, Chelsea got a wide attacker who is already familiar with the Premier League and aware of the pressure that comes with playing for an elite club.
For Manchester United, Garnacho made almost 100 appearances in English football’s top flight despite still being just 21 years of age.
| Alejandro Garnacho’s Premier League career | Total |
| Appearances | 93 |
| Goals | 16 |
| Assists | 8 |
The Argentina international’s price tag was also less than Fofana’s. While Chelsea paid £40m for Garnacho, Lyon wanted £51.5m for Fofana, according to one report from The Independent.

Malick Fofana confirms Chelsea’s interest
Fofana recently spoke about Chelsea and Liverpool, confirming that the two English giants did show interest in him.
However, according to the Belgian, their interest was not concrete enough for him to get a move to the Premier League.
Speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, Fofana said: “There was interest from those two clubs, but ultimately it wasn’t concrete enough. I’ve thought about a transfer, but I think it’s more important now that I play a lot, and that has to happen at Lyon. Because I still have progress to make.”
With his talent and potential, though, it may not be too long before Fofana gets a switch to English football. But with Chelsea signing both Garnacho and Gittens in the summer, a move to Stamford Bridge seems unlikely.
